A 25-year-old man from Eravur has been arrested for defrauding money from the personal bank account operated to collect funds for the treatment of a Grade 09 student of a school in Horana diagnosed with cancer.
The bank account had been set up by the school under the identity of the child’s father, who is a resident of Kahathuduwa.
The suspect is reported to have contacted the child’s father under the guise of depositing money and had obtained his National Identity Card number in July.
Thereafter, it was reported that a sum of over Rs. 300,000 had been deducted on 09 occasions from the bank account.
The father of the child had thereafter filed a complaint with the Colombo Crimes Division on the incident, after which investigations were launched, leading to the arrest of the suspect yesterday. (NewsWire)
