Contempt of Court : AG given time to file charges against Sanath Nishantha

The Attorney General has been granted time until 17th January 2023 to file charges against State Minister Sanath Nishantha pertaining to the cases filed on contempt of court charges.

The directive was issued by the Court of Appeal when three cases filed against the State Minister on contempt of court charges were taken up for consideration today.

Sanath Nishantha was accused of contempt of court by several parties in August for stating that the officers from the Attorney General’s Department and some judges are responsible for letting loose criminals who engaged in the violence in Sri Lanka in May.

“Some judges should take responsibility for this, they give bail for these criminals in one day,” he said, during a press briefing in August.

A petition was thereafter filed at the Court of Appeal by several lawyers accusing State Minister Sanath Nishantha of contempt of court. (NewsWire)
