Court proceeds with case filed on Mount Lavinia beach

The Court of Appeal today decided to proceed with the Case filed against environmental damage caused by sand mining on Mount Lavinia beach.

On 19 June, the Center for Environmental Justice filed the case charging the Department of Coast Conservation with carrying out the sand mining without a public consultation, environmental assessment report, feasibility study and with the use of disposable plastics collected only in the coastal zone.

The case was taken up before Justices AHM Navash and Sobhitha Rajakaruna in the Court of Appeal today and was allowed to proceed further to prevent further environmental damage.

Notice was issued on behalf of the respondents today and it was decided to recall the case on the 22nd of September 2020. (Newswire)
