Sri Lanka will most probably be able to receive COVID-19 vaccines by mid next year, Chief Epidemiologist of the Health Ministry Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said.
He said however, the country will face practical issues in storing the vaccines under the required cool temperature.
“The COVID-19 vaccine approved in the UK is currently being used by being placed in significantly cool temperature. Sri Lanka at present does not have that facility. No vaccine has been approved worldwide as yet with regard to the virus,” Dr. Samaraweera said.
The Chief Epidemiologist said therefore, Sri Lanka will not acquire any COVID-19 vaccine until it is approved by the World Health Organization.
He further warned that despite isolation being lifted in some areas, the public must restrict unnecessary travel as coronavirus patients are continuing to be detected in such areas despite the easing of restrictions. (NewsWire)
