Death row inmate requests permission to attend Pradeshiya Sabha sessions

The Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya has sought the advice of the Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement over a request made by an inmate sentenced to death in connection to Pradeshiya Sabha proceedings.

Death row inmate and Chairman of the Kahawatta Pradeshiya Sabha Vajira Darshana de Silva has requested from Prison Officials to attend the Pradeshiya Sabha sessions.

Following the request, Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya sought the advice of the Ministry of Prison Reforms stating that the inmate was imprisoned at the Welikada Prison.

Upuldeniya further said that he was seeking guidance from the Ministry as the prison laws do not cover and state the procedure for such requests.

In July 2020, the Ratnapura High Court sentenced to death and 47 years in prison for Vajira Darshana de Silva, Parliamentarian Premalal Jayasekera and another individual.

They were sentenced over the shooting incident during the 2015 Presidential Election in Kahawatte in which one person was killed and two other were wounded.

Premalal Jayasekara was allowed to attend Parliament session. (NewsWire)
