Scientific research has revealed there is a decrease in the oxygen level within the airspace of Colombo.
An official from the Colombo Municipal Council explained that however, this will not lead to an immediate issue as Colombo is located close to the sea and also obtains oxygen from the airspace over the sea.
However, the official warned that there maybe issues faced by Colombo residents due to a decrease in the oxygen level in the near future.
The observation was made during a discussion between Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera, Mayor of Colombo Rosy Senanayake, Secretary to the Environment Ministry Dr. Anil Jasinghe, and other officials today.
The CMC together with the Environment Ministry has launched various programmes targeting Colombo to improve the oxygen level in its airspace.
The two Government entities have also decided to implement more programmes in the suburbs of Colombo as well.
Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake called on the public to extend their support for the programmes.
Meanwhile, Minister Amaraweera said his Ministry will provide all necessary support to tackle air and environmental pollution in the country. (NewsWire)
