Disabled driver arrested over attempted murder after trying to run over Policeman

The driver of a lorry has been arrested on charges of attempting to run over a Police Constable who was on traffic duty close to the Peliyagoda Fish Market junction on the Colombo Negombo Road.

Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the driver of the lorry had attempted to flee by running over the Police officer during an inspection of his lorry yesterday.

He said the driver was found to be a disabled man and driving the lorry without a valid licence.

The suspect had attempted to runover the Police Constable and flee when the latter was explaining that it was illegal to drive without a valid licence while being disabled.

DIG Ajith Rohana said the Police Constable had avoided being runover and had later arrested the disabled driver.

The suspect will be produced before court today on charges of attempted murder.

The Police Spokesman said Police officers inspect vehicles and impose fines not for their personal benefits, but in order to curtail road accidents.

He said therefore, attempting to runover Police officers on duty is not just a threat to the Police, but a threat to the law of the country as well.
DIG Ajith Rohana said stringent legal measures will be taken against those engaging in such acts. (NewsWire)
