Election Commission to meet tomorrow (20). What they are going to do ?

The National Election Commission  is scheduled to meet tomorrow (20) to discuss the prevailing issues with regard to holding the General Election.

The nominations for General Election 2020 were accepted from March 12-19, but the Election date scheduled for April 25 was postponed for a date beyond May 14 in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

What are they going to do?

Election Commission will meet Health, Security and Postal authorities prior to their meeting to decide whether and when can they hold General Election.

Who will attend the meeting ?

Commission has invited Army Commander Shavendra Silva. Acting IGP CD Wickramaratne, Heath DG Anil Jasinghe, Post Master General Ranjith Ariyarathne for meetings according to Election Commission sources.   Army Commander Shavendra Silva confirmed he is going for the meeting.

Any indication of when will be the Election  ?

There are already media speculations that May 28th could be the date of Election Day. But Election Commission has denied those reports.

Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya told NewsWire last week that they would need at least 5 weeks to prepare to conduct an Election.

If the Election Commission is satisfied with the situation with regard to Covid19 and related heath concerns, they might fix a date to conduct the Election that is prior to the 2nd of June. But if they are not satisfied, it’s not clear as to what will happen, given that 2nd June is the constitutional deadline for the new parliament to meet.
