End of an era : Deshapriya’s tenure with Election Office comes to an end after 37 years

Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya was today seen clearing his office to be vacated, as his tenure comes to an end.

With the 20th Amendment to the Constitution being passed in Parliament, a new Chairman and members will be appointed to the Commission.

The two other members of the National Election Commission are reported to have already vacated their offices.

Deshapriya concludes his tenure after a period of nearly 37 years with the Election office.

Five new Commissioners will be appointed to the National Election Commission under the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which is two more than the 3 members who were appointed under the 19th Amendment.

Mahinda Deshapriya’s tenure was to end in November 2020 under the 19th Amendment.

Sources said Mahinda Deshapriya has informed authorities he needs a break when he was asked to remain as a member of the future Commission. (NewsWire)
