Extreme weather : Several deaths as more warnings issued

The prevailing showery weather condition over Sri Lanka is expected to continue today, the Department of Meteorology said issuing a severe weather alert for the day. 

The Department said showers or thundershowers will occur at times over most parts of the island.

Very heavy showers above 150mm are likely at some places in the Northern, North-western, Western, and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Nuwara-Eliya, and Kandy districts. 

Heavy showers about 100 mm can be expected at some places in the Matale, Polonnaruwa, Galle, and Matara districts. 

The Met Department further said that a low-pressure area is very likely to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours, starting at 05.30 am today.

The Department said the Naval and fishing communities have been advised not to venture into the aforementioned sea area and southern sea areas of the island until further notice. 

It said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas around the island. 

The sea areas extending from Puttalam to Potuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota will be rough at times. The other sea areas will be fairly rough. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The Met Department added that winds will be Westerly to North-westerly and the speed will be 30-40 kph in the sea areas around the island. 

Wind speed can increase up to 55-65 kph at times in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Potuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota, it added.

The Met Department has requested the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions in view of the inclement weather experienced in the country. 

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre has stated that over 7,100 people from over 1,800 families have been severely affected due to the inclement weather experienced in Sri Lanka. 

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said six people have been reported dead and 3 people have sustained injuries as of today.

The centre said four people have died in earth slips reported in the Rambukkana and Narammala areas today. (NewsWire)
