First pill to treat Covid gets approval in Sri Lanka

Covid-19 Technical Committee has approved the use of Molnupiravir, an oral antiviral pill used against Covid-19 in Sri Lanka.

State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana said that the oral antiviral pill will be registered to be used as a treatment for Corona patients.

Molnupiravir, developed by the US drug companies Merck, Sharp and Dohme (MSD) and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, is the first antiviral medication for Covid which can be taken as a pill rather than injected or given intravenously.

In clinical trials the pill, originally developed to treat flu, cut the risk of hospitalisation or death by about half. (NewsWire)
