Former Minister Mangala Samaraweera passed away

Former Minister Mangala Samaraweera has passed away while being treated for COVID-19 at a private hospital.

The opposition politician had been hospitalized on 13th August after contracting the virus.

He was being treated at a private hospital and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he was being treated until his demise.

Mangala Samaraweera who has previously served as Finance and Foreign Affairs Minister was 65 at the time of his death.

Samaraweera entered politics from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party as its chief organizer in Matara in 1983 and first entered the Parliament of Sri Lanka as a representative of the Matara District in 1989.

He was the Minister of Finance from 2017 to 2019, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, for two terms from 2005 to 2007 and 2015 to 2017.

After the 2019 Presidential election, Samaraweera joined the newly formed Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) which was launched in 2020 and led by opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.

However, he did not contest the Parliamentary elections in August 2020 and moved away from the party. (NewsWire)
