GENERAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR NEXT 36 HOURS – Issued at 04.00 pm on 02nd December 2020 – Met Department

The cyclonic storm ‘ BUREVI’ over the south-west Bay of Bengal, lay centered near latitude 8.7°N and longitude 82.5°E, about 140 km east-southeast of Trincomalee at 1130 hrs today (02nd December).

The system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Trincomalee and Point-Pedro, close to Mullaithivu around tonight (within 7.00 p.m-10.00 p.m on 02 December)

This Cyclonic strom with a wind speed of 75-85 kmph gusting up to 95 kmph and it is very likely
to move nearly westwards thereafter, emerge into Gulf of Mannar.

Tonight:

Intemittent showers/thundershowers will occur in the Eastern, Northern, Northern-central,
North-western ,Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.

Very heavy rainfall above 200mm can be expected at some places.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times elsewhere. Heavy rainfall above 100mm can be
expected at some places. Very strong gusty winds (80-90) kmph can be expected in Northern, North-Central, Eastern, North-Western, Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.

Strong gusty winds (60-70) kmph can be expected elsewhere.

Tomorrow:

Intemittent showers/thundershowers will occur in the Northern and North-western provinces.
Very heavy rainfall above 150mm can be expected at some places.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Eastern, North-central, Western, Central
and sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Heavy rainfall about 100mm can be expected at some places.

Strong gusty winds (60-70) kmph can be expected in Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.

Strong winds (40-50) kmph can be expected elsewhere.

General public is requested to be vigilant regarding impending extreme weather situation.
