GMOA Election Postponed : Hotly-contested battle between two factions

The Colombo District Court has issued an order preventing the election to appoint four crucial office bearers of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) from being held as scheduled on Saturday (26).

The court also instructed that the Association must operate with its existing administration until the holding of the election.

The orders were issued after the court took up for consideration a petition filed by five doctors

The petitioners had sought an interim injunction preventing the GMOA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election of office bearers for 2021/2022 from taking place on June 26.

According to the Sunday Times, the hotly-contested election is facing a battle between two factions both in and out of court.

One faction supporting current President Anurudhdha Padeniya and the other supporting administrator Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara are contesting for the posts of President, Secretary, two Assistant Secretaries and Editor of the GMOA.

A legal battle ensued, after Dr, Bandara filed a case in the Colombo District Court, citing that the GMOA had purposefully rejected his nomination paper to contest the election under false allegations.

Stating that he had filed his nominations on the information given by the GMOA administration, he said the election committee had falsely informed that they were incorrect and thus had rejected his nomination paper.

Dr. Bandara has further accused the GMOA of intentionally giving him incorrect information to sabotage his opportunity to contest the election.

He has therefore sought an interim injunction, valid for 14 days, preventing the GMOA’s 2021/2022 election being held on June 26. (NewsWire)
