Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters who destroyed the ‘Occupy Galle Face’ protest site at the Galle Face Green in Colombo today.
The ‘Occupy Galle Face’, a peaceful public protest, has been underway at the site for the 32nd consecutive day calling on the President and the government to step down over the crises in Sri Lanka.
SLPP supporters who attended a meeting with the Prime Minister at Temple Trees this morning destroyed the anti-government ‘Maina Go Gama’ protest site that was set up outside the Temple Trees over the last few weeks.
Thereafter, they headed to the ‘Occupy Galle Face’ protest site at the Galle Face Green, assaulted peaceful protesters at ‘Gota Go Gama’, and destroyed several protest-related materials.
The Police have fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse the SLPP supporters behaving in an unruly manner at the ‘Occupy Galle Face’ protest site.
According to sources, nine people have reportedly been injured in the clashes and have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. (NewsWire)
