The Government is engaged in negotiations with regard to the four originally planned monorail projects in Sri Lanka.
The negotiations come following the cancellation of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) System in October, which was to be constructed on a Japanese loan.
According to the Sunday Morning, Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge stated that the former Government had removed the Battaramulla- Colombo stretch of the monorail project and had granted it to Japan to be constructed as an LRT.
As a result, the LRT project was cancelled and had been included back into the original monorail project.
The monorail project will run from Battaramulla to Colombo, Homagama to Colombo, Moratuwa to Colombo, and Ragama to Colombo.
Minister Lokuge said the project will be constructed as a Private –public Partnership, while the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project has been completed.
The Government is currently surveying and acquiring the necessary lands for the project. Construction of the project will commence once the lands are finalized, he said.
Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge added that the Government is yet to finalize the finances for the project. (NewsWire)
