Govt to commence new programme soon to repatriate SL migrant workers stranded overseas

The Government will commence a new programme soon to repatriate Sri Lankan migrant workers stranded overseas due to the Covid pandemic, Minister of Labour Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

The Minister pointed out that there was a delay in repatriating Sri Lankan migrant workers due to a lack of quarantine centres.

Minister Silva said measures are being taken to establish nine quarantine centres in all nine provinces in Sri Lanka using funds from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE).

He said discussions have been held with the Covid Task Force on establishing the new quarantine centres, and necessary measures are being taken in this regard.

Sri Lankan migrant workers who are unable to acquire flight tickets to return to Sri Lanka have been requested to inform their relevant Sri Lankan Missions or to contact the Foreign Ministry free of charge via 800 119 119. (NewsWire)
