Govt. to investigate teenager’s loss of vision due to drugs mailed from Meerigama hospital during COVID

The Government has appointed a committee consisting of Specialist Doctors from the Meerigama Base hospital to investigate the loss of vision of a 16 -year- old boy in Meerigama.

The teenager is reported to have lost his sight after consuming prescription drugs dispatched via mail from the Meerigama Hospital on 04 April.

The boy is said to have visited the Meerigama Base Hospital on 03rd April for epilepsy treatment following which the hospital had mailed his prescription drugs due to the curfew imposed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the teenager’s parents, the boy had lost his vision fourteen days after consuming the prescribed drugs.

State Minister of Pharmaceutical Production, and Supply and Regulation Channa Jayasumana had thereafter visited the child at his residence in Kaleliya, Meerigama, after the incident was reported on Media.

During his visit, the State Minister said that an investigation must be launched to ascertain why the child’s medication was changed to a different medicine after their visit to the hospital on 03 April.

“The change in medicine had caused the child to lose his sight. An investigation must be conducted to ascertain why this change had taken place’, he said.

State Minister Channa Jayasumana further said that the Government will take necessary measures to bring back the eyesight of the affected teenager. (Newswire)
