Govt. to regulate beauty pageants

The Government has decided to introduce rules to regulate beauty pageants held involving Sri Lanka.

The decision has been taken following the recent controversial incident that occurred at the Mrs. Sri Lanka for Mrs. World pageant 2021.

The winner of the pageant Psuhpika Silva was uncrowned by reigning Mrs. World Caroline Jurie, resulting in Jurie and former model Chula Padmendra being arrested and released on bail.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, State Minister of Women and Child Development Piyal Nishantha said as a result of the incident, it was essential to monitor any event hosted using the name of Sri Lanka.

He said discussions were underway to formulate guidelines to regulate private events held related to women and children.

The State Minister pointed out that events such as the Mrs. Sri Lanka pageant require to be regulated to ensure that it meets international standards.

The Ministry will hold talks with private organizations to reach a common consensus on the matter, he said. (NewsWire)
