Harsha says no to Finance Ministry: Explains why

Economist and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dr. Harsha de Silva has issued a clarification on his decision not to join the new government that is yet to be appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

It is speculated that the Parliamentarian was offered the post of Finance Minister but had refused to accept it, while he has also been urged by the citizens to take up the role.

Further explaining his decision to refuse the offer, MP Harsha de Silva pointed out the cause of the current turmoil in the country.

He said the cause is the existing political culture in Sri Lanka, which disregards the needs of the nation and its economic policies, and the love for power and political privileges.

He pointed out that it is the practice of the politicians to state various stories and claim power in Sri Lanka.

Stating that he had entered politics to make a change in the country, the MP pointed out that the youth of the nation have launched the struggle, and now is the time to seize the chance and make the necessary political change.

“The youth expect an honest and transparent political system, which I cannot go against. I cannot go against the will of the people. They have requested me to take over as the Minister of Finance. I will not do so, as the people don’t expect such political games at this juncture,” he said.

MP Harsha de Silva said it is better to go home than accept a political post to safeguard one key political family.

Pointing out that the President’s priority should have been to answer the public’s wishes, he said the SJB has held several rounds of discussions with the President in this regard.

The MP stressed it is paramount to overhaul the existing systems than protect the administrative system that was rejected by the people.

Parliamentarian Harsha de Silva said he has never engaged in politics for personal gain and will never do so, urging all to work on building a nation that is devoid of personal political gains. (NewsWire)
