Health Minister reveals grim Covid statistics of last 10 days to Parliament

Nearly 591 Covid related deaths have been reported within the last 10 days in Sri Lanka, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi informed Parliament today.

She said nearly 21, 344 COVID-19 cases were also reported in the country from the 25th of July.

A total of 134, 179 PCR tests had been conducted during this period,and a significant increase has been observed in the number of Covid patients being treated in hospitals.

The health officials were able to maintain patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (IUC) of hospitals between the range of 140- 150 patients, she said.

Stating that there is a significant increase in Covid cases and deaths at present, the Health Minister said 23, 804 Covid patients were treated in hospitals as of 23rd July.

However, the number of Covid patients treated in hospitals increased to 30,017 as of August 1, 2021, she added.

Minister Wanniarachchi said 19,688 children under the age of ten and 26,143 children between the ages of 10 and 18 have so far tested positive for COVID-19.

The Minister added that 14 children below the age of 18 have so far succumbed to COVID-19.
