IMF issues statement on current situation

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says it is monitoring political and economic developments in Sri Lanka “very closely”.

According to Reuters, the IMF Sri Lanka mission chief Masahiro Nozaki has issued a statement on the current national crisis.

Nozaki said the IMF is monitoring political and economic developments in Sri Lanka “very closely” as public unrest in Sri Lanka grows amid its worst economic crisis in decades.

“IMF staff is looking forward to program discussions with the authorities, including during the visit of the newly appointed Finance Minister to Washington later this month,” she further said.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Monday dissolved the cabinet and appointed a new finance minister, while also seeking a new central bank governor.

However, the newly appointed Finance Minister Ali Sabry tendered his resignation today, putting the much-anticipated IMF talks in question. (NewsWire)
