Infant body exhumed after burial mix-up in Panadura

The body of a still born male infant that was buried in the Minuwanpitiya Cemetery has been exhumed under the guidance of the Panadura Acting Magistrate on Tuesday (22).

The Panadura South Police said a woman from Kesellwatte had given birth to a still born child at a maternity hospital in Panadura on 30 November and the infant was buried at the Cemetery designated to the Panadura Base hospital mortuary.

Another woman from Kahathuduwa is also reported to have given birth to a still born child on the same day.

The Police said the infant born to the woman from Kahathuduwa had been accidently buried at the Minuwanpitiya Cemetery, instead of the baby that was born to the woman from Kesellwatte.

After the mistake was identified, a complaint had been filed at the Panadura South Police in this regard.

Based on the complaint, steps were taken to exhume the body of the child on the orders of the Panadura Magistrate’s Court.

The body of the infant was later submitted to the Panadura Base Hospital to be subjected to a post mortem examination. (NewsWire)
