Inquiry against CID for summoning journalists despite Govt. order

Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to conduct an investigation into the non-compliance by a group of officers attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The CID officers have reportedly visited a local media institution over news coverage on the recently uncovered Garlic scam involving Lanka Sathosa, despite an order being issued not to question journalists over the matter.

The directive had been issued by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa instructing officials to refrain from summoning reporters to the CID in connection to investigations into the Garlic scam.

Issuing a statement, the Ministry of Public Security said Minister Weerasekara has called on the IGP to conduct an investigation into the actions of the CID officers.

He has also instructed the Peliyagoda Special Investigation Unit which was conducting a probe into the Garlic scam to hand over the investigation to the CID.

Minister Weerasekara has ordered the CID to conduct a complete investigation into the matter. (NewsWire)
