Investigation over former local councillor’s death in Police custody

An incident has been reported from the Hungama Police station today (18) where a 51-year-old suspect had died inside the police station prison cell.

CCTV footages from the police station show the suspect suddenly collapsing inside the cell.

Police officers have admitted the victim to Ranna hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the time of admission.

Suspect has been identified as a former local councillor from Tangalle.

Following the death, area residents gathered at the police station, accusing the police of foul play and demanded a fair investigation into the incident.

A tense situation ensued in the area as residents and relatives of the deceased blocked the Matara – Kataragama main road, demanding justice.

Police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said that the suspect was arrested on illegal liquor related charges and then collapsed inside the cell due to a sudden illness. Police are conducting further investigations. (NewsWire)
