Israel – Palestine conflict : Sujith Bandara Yatawara’s remains arrive in SL

The remains of Sri Lankan Sujith Bandara Yatawara who was confirmed dead in the conflict between Israel and Palestine arrived in Sri Lanka today, it was reported.

According to media reports, the remains arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake this morning (Nov 09). 

Following the outbreak of conflict between Israel and Palestine, Sujith Bandara Yatawara of Sri Lankan origin was assumed to have been held hostage by the Hamas Militants.

However, the Israeli Police had found an unidentified body after which the Sri Lankan Mission in Tel Aviv had taken measures to verify the identity.

Last week, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Israel Nimal Bandara announced that the Israel Police had confirmed the death of 48-year-old Sujith Bandara Yatawara.

Ambassador Bandara said the death had been confirmed following a match in the DNA samples of the unidentified body found by the Israeli Police and those obtained from Yatawara’s children.

Sujith Bandara Yatawara is the second Sri Lankan death to be reported in Israel due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. 

Earlier, Anula Ratnayake of Sri Lankan origin was reported dead in Israel following the attack by Hamas militants in October. Her body was sent to Sri Lanka on October 28, 2023. (NewsWire)
