JVP files FR petition against SUV imports for MPs

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition with the Supreme Court against the Government’s decision to import luxury vehicles for Parliamentarians.

Former JVP Councillor Mahinda Jayasinghe and Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala were present at the occasion.

In the FR petition, the JVP has declared the importation of vehicles for Members of Parliament as illegal and the issuance of letters of credit as illegal, and to impose all applicable duties and other taxes, if any, on the sale of such vehicles at public auction.

The petition further seeks action to recover all expenses incurred in cash and loss of Government revenue and to make other appropriate orders on the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to grant relief which the Constitution deems just and equitable to the Supreme Court as the case may be.

Meanwhile, the Government has announced that it has cancelled the importation of luxury vehicles for the members of Parliament. (NewsWire)
