The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today recorded a statement from former LTTE Eastern Province commander Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman for over 7- hours, over his recent claims on killing military personnel during the war.
Karuna Amman was summoned before the CID on Tuesday (23), but failed to appear, informing that he was unwell.
In a letter through his lawyers, Karuna had said he will only be able to appear once he recovers, requesting a new date to appear before the CID.
Addressing a public gathering in the East on 19 May, Karuna Amman had stated that he was more dangerous than the Coronavirus as he had killed between 2000- 3000 troops in Elephant Pass during the war.
Following his revelation, a number of individuals, including politicians had called for Karuna’s arrest and an investigation to be launched into the matter.
Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C. D. Wickremeratne had thereafter ordered the CID to immediately launch an investigation.
As part of the investigation, the CID recorded a statement from Karuna Amman today.
Speaking to reporters after recording his statement, Karuna Amman said he did not state anything wrong or to offend any person.
“This issue has arisen due to the actions of certain media. I love the people of this nation. We are conducting an election campaign free of racism and violence. I only reminded the public of an incident that happened in the past. It is pointless making it an issue. A big debate has arisen on the subject in order to reduce the Sinhala votes of the current Government. We are contesting as an independent Tamil party. We will not do anything to harm another political party leader or religious leader. Likewise I will not disrespect the Sri Lanka Army. The Military protects the public. Therefore, I respect the Army.” he further said.
Commenting on Karuna’s recent statement, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said the history of Karuna Amman was no secret.
Addressing a political rally on Tuesday (24), the PM said Karuna’s revelation of killing a large number of troops in a night is currently dominating a majority of political stages.
However, the Opposition remains silent on past politicians who supplied weapons to the LTTE, through which a number of Military personnel were killed during the war, he added.
Meanwhile, an Urban Councilor from Kaduwela today filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) application with the Supreme Court seeking the immediate arrest of Karuna Amman and urged the Court to take legal action. (Newswire)
