Maharagama Urban Council (UC) Member Nishantha Wimalachandra has been arrested over a brawl that took place at the Council premises.
Wimalachandra was arrested based on a complaint filed by fellow Maharagama UC Member Savithri Gunasekera.
Video footage of both UC members engaging in a physical altercation during a Council meeting a few days ago, was shared on social media recently.
It was revealed that the brawl had broken out allegedly over an act of ‘indecent exposure’ committed by the male UC members a few weeks ago at the council.
The Sri Lanka Police said statements have been recorded from five people over the incident.
Maharagama UC Member Savithri Gunasekera speaking to reporters revealed that female members of the council had been constantly verbally abused by other male councilors on multiple occasions.
She said female councilors had faced this form of sexual harassment for a long period, but were unable to prove it due to a lack of CCTV camera’s inside the chambers of the council. (NewsWire)
