An individual charged with sexually abusing a mentally challenged female was sentenced to 58 ½ years of rigorous imprisonment by Kandy Magistrate R.S.S. Sapuvida on Friday (11).
The man, from Ududumbara, had sexually abused the youth on three occasions between 18 December 2012 and 18 February 2013 in the Medha- Mahanuwara area.
After pleading guilty, the suspect was sentenced to 18- years in prison on the charges of sexually abusing the youth.
The Magistrate had thereafter increased the jail term by three times in accordance with the offence having been carried out three times, amounting to 54-years in prison.
The man had earlier been ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 25,000 per incident, amounting to Rs. 75, 000. However, due to a failure in make the payment, the Magistrate further imprisoned him to another 1/12 years.
The Magistrate had further ordered the suspect to pay Rs. 1 million to the affected female and in the event he fails to make the payment to be imprisoned with rigorous imprisonment for another 2 years.
The Kandy Magistrate also ordered that in the event the suspect fails to make a payment of Rs. 15,000 as a security deposit for the youth, his sentence will be further extended by another year. (NewsWire)
