Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando today assumed duties by laying the foundation stone for the construction of the Umang Road which leads from Kurunegala to Negombo.
Breaking the tradition of assuming duties at the Ministry premises, Minister Fernando instead also commenced the carpeting of Vajiragnana Mawatha in Kurunegala.
He further surveyed the Malliyadeva Vidyalaya in Kurunegala for the construction of a basketball court and also planted a sapling at the school premises.
Speaking to reporters, Minister Johnston Fernando said that the Kadawatha to Meerigama phase of the Central Expressway will be constructed within 3 to 3 1/2 years.
He further said that the Meerigama to Kurunegala phase of the Central expressway will be completed over the next 6 months.
Kurunegala District MPs U. K. Sumith Udukumbura and Samanpriya Herath, Colombo District MP Premanath Sri Dolawatte, and Secretary to the Ministry of Highways R. W. Ranjith Premasiri participated in the events alongside the Minister.
