‘Missing’ Rishad’s lawyers file writ petition requesting order to prevent arrest

MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s lawyers today filed a writ petition at the Court of Appeal requesting an order preventing his arrest.

Earlier this week, the Attorney General directed the Acting IGP to arrest MP Rishad Bathuideen on charges of Criminal Misappropriation of Public Funds and Violation of Election Laws.

The Former Minister is accused of transporting internally displaced persons(IDP) from Puttalam to Mannar in 222 CTB buses to vote at the 2019 Presidential Election.

MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s accountant, Alagarathnam Manoranjan was arrested yesterday by a team of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officers in Kirulapone.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that Manoranjan reportedly served as Bathiudeen’s accountant in charge of the project to transport the IDPs during the election.

A Police Constable in MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s security detail was also arrested yesterday for aiding the MP to evade arrest.

The CID officials had also seized two vehicles used by MP Bathiudeen and two weapons, SDIG Rohana added.

Meanwhile, six teams from the CID are currently looking for MP Rishad Bathiudeen, following the Attorney General’s directive to the police to arrest him.

A Senior Police officer told NewsWire that 6 police teams are looking for him since Tuesday afternoon. He is not at home. We hope we should be able to arrest him soon. (NewsWire)
