Seven democratic party representatives of the Ikh Khural State, who supported Minister Altankhuyag Norov as their party’s candidate to represent the party for the presidency, staged a hunger strike in front of the government’s state palace in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The parliament members went on strike in response to the national election commission’s decision to accept their opposing faction’s nominee , Erdene Sodnomzundui, from their party as the legitimate candidate who will represent the party in the upcoming presidential election on June 9. Today, Saturday, supporters of Altankhuyag demonstrated their support with Altankhuyag’s plea and with the MPs who performed the hunger strike.
Altankhuyag Norov questioned the judicial minister why he is not accepting the paperwork and if he can do this why can’t they. He further stated that one must avoid legitimizing the words of someone who pushed this narrative. “You know who I am; I have never lied, killed anyone, or been imprisoned.” he added.
In response the judicial minister Naymbaatar Khisgee stated that there was no such thing as COVID at the time. The minister also mentioned that 12 people were killed and 1000 people were infected with the virus yesterday. He stated that the party feud needed to be ended not making it a national issue and quarantine orders needed to be followed. “Citizens have stated that they are being quarantined for 28 days and have requested that we disperse politicians who are disobeying lockdown regulations” he further stated.
In an interview with the former Mayor Bat-uul mentioned that it was the former prime minister Khurelsukh who orchestrated the chaos making this possible. He further added that it was the former prime minister who is dividing the Democratic party and the Mongolian people’s party must avoid tampering with democracy in this manner.
