MP proposes new method to increase foreign remittance by allowing SL expatriates to send vehicles to SL

Government Parliamentarian Premanath C. Dolawatta has sent a letter to the President proposing to enable Sri Lankan expatriates living abroad to send vehicles to Sri Lanka which they have purchased in those respective countries while paying the necessary taxes in US Dollars.

The MP said the proposal will fulfil a long-standing request of the expatriates to allow them to send the vehicles to Sri Lanka, which they can buy for much lower prices in the country they currently reside in while providing the country much needed foreign remittance by getting them to pay the necessary import tax in foreign currency.

He stated that this will lead to a reduction in the prices of used vehicles which are currently being sold at higher prices in Sri Lanka.

MP Premanath C. Dolawatta further said that as Dollars are not paid for the importation of these vehicles, it will also enable to strengthen the foreign reserves in the country.

The MP also said that the tax payable can be adjusted according to the foreign remittance made by the Sri Lankan expatriate. (NewsWire)
