The war memorial monument constructed at the Mullivaikkal coast in Mullaitivu has been destroyed by an unidentified group early this morning, the Mullaitivu Police said.
According to Lankadeepa, residents of Mullivaikkal who had visited the monument to clean it had found that the monument had been broken. They had thereafter informed the Mullaitivu Police in this regard.
Area residents have claimed that the suspects have broken the beacons constructed around the monument to light fire lamps and have used it to damage the main war monument.
May 2021 marks the 12th anniversary of the end of the 30-year civil war in Sri Lanka.
However, no events are permitted to be organized due to the coronavirus situation in the country.
