Murali slams four senior cricketers over contract issue

Sri Lanka Cricket Technical Committee member Muttiah Muralitharan yesterday slammed four senior current Sri Lankan cricketers over the cricket contract issue.

Murali said that four cricketers did not allow other young cricketers to sign contracts because their payments were reduced.

Speaking during an interview with Hiru TV, Murali said that now cricketers will not get Central Contracts this year because they did not take it when it was offered.

Murali blamed the senior players for threatening younger ones and even said that players during the negotiations refused to wear Sri Lanka and sponsorship logos.

Sri Lankan cricketers didn’t sign contracts over transparency issues, but Murali said it was mainly because senior cricketers got less pay in the new performance based system introduced.

“This year we think they don’t need a central contract, we can go with tour contracts,” Murali said.

Sri Lankan cricketers later agreed to sign Central Contracts after transparency details were revealed, but Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) only offered them tour contracts.

With the new decision, players will not get a monthly pay anymore and test players are the worst affected as they have no tours scheduled until November. (NewsWire)
