The Ministry of Highways last evening (13) tested the lighting systems set up at the new Kelani Bridge which is to be commissioned soon.
Issuing a statement, the Ministry shared pictures of the illuminated new Kelani Bridge, which was implemented using an engineering design known as extradosed type.
The Ministry said the design uses stay cables to connect two main pylons with the bridge deck and to share the weight of the loads from the bridge deck.
In 2014, the then President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Highways had initiated the New Kelani Bridge project and had signed the plans and the approval.
On 4th July 2021, Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando had instructed his Ministry officials to illuminate the bridge to become an attraction for tourists, the Ministry said.
The Ministry of Highways added that the bridge would adorn the Kelani River and increase the splendour of the capital and soon be a landmark attraction among both local and foreign tourists. (NewsWire)
