The Sky Pet Animal Hospital which was previously located within the SLAF Guwanpura Complex was relocated and reconstructed at a location also at Guwanpura which is now easily accessible to the general public. This projects which was carried out on the instructions of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana was declared open yesterday (06 July 2021).
The Sky Pet Animal Hospital of the SLAF is an inhouse solution to the management of animal resources with special emphasis on Canines and Felines. The SLAF has a special Air Dog Unit at Katunayake which deploys Air Dogs at locations such as the Bandaranayake international Airport, Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport and the Ratmalana Airport. The special services provided by the Sky Pet Animal Hospital ensures the continuous care is being provided for these specially imported canines who are trained in the detection of dangerous and narcotic substances at airports.
The previous locations of the hospital which was within the Guwanpura Complex caused many inconveniences to the general public who were also given the opportunity to avail the services provided by the Sky Pet Animal Hospital. However, as a result of the directives received from the Commander of the Air Force, the Command Welfare Project Officer of the SLAF, Air Commodore Aruna Jayathilaka and his team from the Sky Pet Animal Hospital led by Group Captain Erandhika Gunawardhana, the Senior Veterinary Officer of the SLAF and Squadron Leader Ruwan Naullage, the Officer in Charge of the Sky Pet Animal Hospital in Colombo were able to find a suitable location at Guwanpura itself which would be easily accessible to member of the public who would like to make use of the unique services on offer at this hospital.
With this new location and new building, the Sky Pet Animal Hospital will have an enhanced treatment capacity at any given time, new Surgery Rooms, Ultrasound Scanning facilities, Dental Treatment facilities and even hospitalization facilities for Canines and Felines. The team of Veterinarians at Sky Pet include Flight Lieutenant Nimantha De Silva and Flight Lieutenant Thananjan Karunanidi.
