Next Speaker : Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Matara district MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena’s name has been proposed to be appointed as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament of Sri Lanka.

Senior Government Minister told Newswire that a proposal was submitted in this regard to the today’s government MPs meeting.

Former Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya’s name has proposed for the position of Deputy Speaker.

Parliament will elect a speaker tomorrow morning in its first meeting. Opposition is unlikely to put forward any names to the position of speaker.

Procedure of electing a speaker

Election to select the Speaker of the House.

  • Any member addressing the Secretary-General of Parliament shall propose any member as the Speaker
  • If only one member is proposed and seconded as the Speaker, the Secretary-General of Parliament will declare that person as the Speaker of the House.

Voting will take place to elect the Speaker of the House.

  • Candidates who will obtain the least number of votes shall be excluded accordingly until one can be elected.
  • The results of the ballot shall be declared by the Secretary-General of Parliament.
