One-horse race for SLC election after opposing camp withdraws

Three main candidates contesting the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) election have announced their withdrawal from the election.

In a letter to the SLC Election Committee, K. Mathivanan, Bandula Warnapura and Nishantha Ranatunga said they have decided to withdraw from the election.

Mathivanan, Warnapura and Ranatunga had submitted nominations to contest for the posts of President, Vice President, and Secretary respectively.

Current SLC president Shammi Silva and his camp are expected to regain control of Sri Lanka’s richest sports body for another two years when the poll is held on Thursday (20) virtually.

It will be a one-horse race for the Silva camp as their opposing camp, led by K. Mathivanan and including Nishantha Ranatunga and Bandula Warnapura, have withdrawn from the contest to show dissent towards a backdated gazette.

According to the Sunday Times Newspaper last weekend said that the Mathivanan camp know winning is beyond their reach as Silva and his team are said to have garnered unprecedented support from the membership after generously looking after their interests during the last two years. (NewsWire)
