Opposition Leader attacked in Galle Face

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa was today attacked as he visited the ‘Gota Go Gama’ protest site set up at the Galle Face Green in Colombo.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters today attacked peaceful protesters at both ‘Maina Go Gama’ in front of the Temple Trees and ‘Gota Go Gama’ at the Galle Face Green, destroying several protest-related materials, including tents.

The SLPP supporters engaged in the act following a meeting with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees in Colombo this morning.

MP Sajith Premadasa, who was accompanied by MP Eran Wickremeratne, was attacked by a group of people as they arrived at the location.

The two MPs were forced to return to their vehicles and drive away due to the attack.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramun (JVP) MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake also arrived at the Galle Face Green in Colombo today where peaceful protesters were attacked by government supporters.

MP Dissanayake questioned how a peaceful protest site that has been in existence for nearly a month could be attacked in such a manner.

Condemning the actions of the government supporters, the MP said they cannot attack peaceful protesters and destroy their belongings. (NewsWire)
