Over 1200 persons in the Western Province have been placed in self- quarantine on charges of violating the Quarantine Act.
The Police said 1217 persons were placed in self- quarantine for failing to wear face masks in public places.
On Friday (26), Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said those who are not wearing face masks in public places will be penalised.
He added that legal action will be taken against violators of health guidelines.
The following day (27), the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C. D. Wickramaratne informed all Police Stations to advise people who are not wearing face masks in public places and to record their details.
The Police also announced, on the same day, that a 14- day mandatory self- quarantine will be imposed from Sunday (28) for anyone refusing to wear a face mask in public places.
