The public has been advised to refrain from giving vitamin C tablets to children based on misinformation, Consultant Paediatric Intensivist at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Dr Nalin Kitulwatte said.
Dr. Kitulwatte said several statements on social media are being spread at present claiming that it was suitable to give vitamin C to children during the Covid pandemic.
He said it is not appropriate to provide medicine to children without proper medical advise, as giving children arbitrary medication can cause other side effects.
“Parents might not be aware of the amount of vitamin C that should be administered to a child. If the child is suffering from fever it is only advisable to give the child the prescribed dose of paracetamol. But if the child is suffering from a severe illness it is appropriate to get a doctor’s advise and then administer the medicines prescribed by the said doctor,” he explained. (NewsWire)
