Twelve illegally imported vehicles valued at Rs. 55 million have been seized by the Customs Department.
The Risk Management Unit of the Department had seized the vehicles on 23 December, 2020.
Customs Spokesman Sunil Jayaratne said the vehicles had been imported in three containers from Singapore and had been declared as generator parts at the Ports Authority.
The twelve vehicles had been illegally imported by fraudulently using the name of an officer employed at the British High Commission in Sri Lanka.
Sunil Jayaratne said one suspect who was arrested in connection to the illegal imports has been remanded till 20 January, after being produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (07).
Among the vehicles were two Hiace vans, three Toyota Vitz cars, one Nissan minivan, three Hijet minivans, and three Hustler Wagons.
The illegally imported vehicles were inspected by officials of the Customs Department at the Grayline Container Yard in Wellampitiya, Orugodawatte today, and were displayed to the media. (NewsWire)
