42 activists including Frontline Socialist Party leaders were arrested by Police for trying to hold a protest in Colpetty in close proximity to the US Embassy and Lipton Circle, defying a Court order that barred them from protesting.
The Police had obtained the court order against the Frontline Socialist Party from staging the protest near US Embassy in Colombo citing Covid19 health regulations.
Protest was organised against the US Government, in support of the Black lives matter movement.
FSP leaders Kumar Gunaratnam, Duminda Nagamauwa and lawyer Nuwan Bopage among those who were arrested.
“We didn’t violate any court order, Police acted illegally, there was no court order to ban protest in Lipton Circle, Police even arrested people protesting there” FSP Activists Chandana Sirimalwatta told NewsWire.
The protest had not even started at the time #Police #arrests were made today when a group gathered outside the #Kollupitiya market. Can this be interpreted as “in the vicinity” of the @USEmbSL as per the #InjunctionOrder obtained by the Police yesterday #lka pic.twitter.com/LAcZ2JlkIL
