Police provide update on special four-day operation launched on motorcyclists

Over 4500 motorcyclists have been charged with traffic offences during the special islandwide operation conducted by the Police.

Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said charges were filed against 4511 motorcyclists.

The motorcyclists were detected during the operation launched from Wednesday (31) till 06am today.

He said 122 motorcyclists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 650 were arrested for failing to wear helmets.

DIG Ajith Rohana said 1003 were arrested on charges of various traffic offences.

He said the special operation will be carried out today as well, while it will continue till Sunday, the 4th of April.

The Police Spokesman said the operation is being conducted to curtail road accidents, which has seen a significant increase in the last few weeks.

He said a large number of victims of these accidents have been identified as motorcyclists.

DIG Rohana said therefore the Police are taking measures to prevent further accidents and to safeguard the lives of motorcyclists. (NewsWire)
