Minister of Power Dullas Alahapperuma has charged that the letter by President’s Secretary P.B. Jayasundara instructing to close down the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) was issued without his knowledge.
Jayasundara had issued a directive to the Treasury Secretary to shut down the PUCSL from 1 January, in line with the budget proposed for 2021.
Minister Alahapperuma said that a regulatory body is required for the electricity sector, despite the directive to shut down the PUCSL, which is the existing power regulator in the country.
The Minister further pointed out that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Finance Minister had only proposed in the budget 2021 to amend the PUCSL and the Ceylon Electricity Board acts to expedite power-related projects. (NewsWire)
