President agrees to all-party interim govt under new PM – Maithri

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has agreed to form an all-party interim government under a new Prime Minister, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) said today.

Chairman of the SLFP MP Maithripala Sirisena said that the President had agreed to form an interim government including all parties under a new Prime Minister and new Cabinet.

He further said that the President had made the agreement during a meeting with the 11 independent parties of the government that was held this morning.

Meanwhile, MP Weerasumana Weerasingha said that a decision was also taken to discuss the matter with other political parties representing the Parliament.

He said that during the meeting it was decided to discuss the formation of an all-party interim government with other political parties representing the Parliament.

The 11 independent parties of the government, including the SLFP, had recently quit the government and had informed their decision to remain independent in Parliament until an all-party interim government is established to resolve the current national crisis in Sri Lanka.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had called for a meeting of all the political parties in the government today to discuss the formation of an all-party interim government.

The move comes after the public commenced staging large-scale public protests across the country calling for the resignation of the President, Prime Minister, and the government over the prevailing economic crisis in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
