Prime Minister slashes duty on toddy

The duty imposed on bottled toddy has been slashed by half on the instructions of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The duty imposed on bottled toddy will be reduced from Rs. 50 to Rs. 25 and will come into effect from today.

According to NewsFirst, the PM has also ordered to extend the operating hours of toddy taverns by two hours from today. Taverns can now remain open from 10 am to 2 pm, and 5 pm to 9 pm.

The PM in his capacity as the Finance Minister has further amended a law dating back to 1985, permitting the increase of the amount of toddy allowed to be sold to a person from 1.5 litres to 3 litres.

As per the amended regulations, a pass will be required to transport over 3 litres of toddy within the country. (NewsWire)
