A decision on enforcing a ban on the burqa and niqab will be taken only after consultation, the Government announced today.
Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told reporters today that the Government will not rush through in this regard.
Responding to questions raised by journalists during the weekly cabinet media briefing held today, he said a decision was taken to ban the burqa and niqab over national security concerns.
Minister Rambukwella said however, a final decision will be taken after consultation and a common consensus is reached on the matter.
He further explained that both the burqa and niqab are being considered under the proposed ban.
On Saturday (13), Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera said he has signed the cabinet paper on the proposed ban and has submitted it to the Cabinet for approval.
However, according to sources, the matter was not taken up for discussion during the Cabinet meeting held yesterday. (NewsWire)
